The 2010 Volkswagen Touareg is designed to tackle just about any type of adventure, all while providing the driver and passengers with a blend of German style, usability, and engineering.  With a comprehensive collection of standard features that can be enhanced by four available trim packages, and a starting price of $40,850, the 2010 Touareg goes beyond what drivers have come to expect from the modern sport utility vehicle.

At every angle, the 2010 Touareg carries clean lines that give a sense of luxury without taking away from the SUV’s ready-for-anywhere attitude. Up front, halogen headlamps and fog lamps (Bi-Xenonä High Intensity Gas-discharged headlamps with AFS can be ordered) keep the road well-lit. An understated front grille sits above the chromed center bumper section, and the standard, blacked out lower front bumper provides a welcome contrast. The Touareg’s profile is marked by chrome window trim and silver roof rails, along with chrome trim at the bottom of both doors. The tail lamp lenses are smoked red, sitting above the clear turn signal and reverse light lenses, and a chromed rear bumper insert gives an extra touch of subtle style.

Exterior

The 2010 Touareg can also be ordered with special exterior upgrades, including a chrome grille, a sport front bumper, body-colored lower front bumper and side skirt areas and special metallic paint. All-season tires are fitted on the standard 17-inch, and the optional 19-inch or 20-inch alloy wheels.

Interior

No matter the conditions outside, the inside of the 2010 Touareg is always prepared with a unique combination of comfort, convenience, and technology. Both the front and rear seats are covered in soft yet durable V-Tex leatherette, in either beige or anthracite, while walnut wood accents abound throughout. Also available are full leather seating in four different color schemes, along with Vavona wood, Poplar wood, or “Engine Spin” metallic trim, depending on the desired interior package. A 12-way power driver’s seat gives the ultimate in commanding adjustability, and a standard manual adjustable passenger seat up front (a 12-way power adjustable unit is also available) keeps the navigator comfortable, too. In all packages, both front seats are heated, and the leather-wrapped steering wheel not only can handle turning duties, but also allows for instant access of a variety of interior systems, from the standard AM/FM/Sirius/CD stereo and available navigation system, to the hands-free, Bluetooth calling setup.

The Touareg’s CLIMATIC dual-zone air conditioning allows for customized cooling and heating up front, while a large power sunroof can let in loads of sun and fresh air from above. Out back, a power lift gate makes for easier storage and removal of groceries, sporting goods, and more. The standard stereo system includes ten speakers, and six months of complimentary SIRIUS Satellite Radio service. The optional Dynaudio Premium Sound System comes with upgraded speakers, a 600 Watt amplifier, and Digital Sound Processor (DSP) technology.

The optional premium navigation system adds a 6.5” high resolution touch-screen display (which works with the available rearview camera), an integrated 30GB hard drive (10GB for navigation, 20GB for audio), WMA / MP3 audio CD playback, DVD video playback when the Touareg is not in motion, an SD memory card slot, an auxiliary input connection, and three months of Sirius Traffic programming. A special Media Device Interface with iPod cable can be added for playback and control of USB-based devices or drives.

Engine and Transmission

The 2010 Touareg can be fitted with one of two worthy powerplants, each packed with acceleration, usability, and fuel economy: Volkswagen’s efficient yet torque-laden 3.0-liter, turbocharged six-cylinder clean diesel TDI engine, or the compact 3.6-liter, narrow angle V6 gasoline engine.

Able to delicately balance hauling power with decreased emissions and fuel consumption that are usually enjoyed with smaller engines, the 3.0L TDI clean diesel engine is a perfect complement to the Touareg’s “drive anywhere” spirit. Four valves per cylinder, common rail direct fuel injection with a high pressure pump, and eight-hole piezo injectors make sure the precise amount of fuel is used regardless of the situation. A special DeNOx catalytic converter, augmented by a special injection system that sprays a synthetic urea-based solution (AdBlue) into the exhaust, helps reduce Nox emissions by up to 90 percent, and lets the 3.0T meet the Tier 2, Bin 5/ULEV II standards imposed across all 50 U.S. states. In terms of driving force 3.0L TDI gives 225 horsepower at 3,500 to 4,000 rpm , and 407 lbs.-ft. of torque at 1,750 to 2,250 rpm – all while returning EPA-estimated 25 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg in the city. With a full tank of fuel (26.4 gallons), the Touareg TDI clean diesel can travel more than 600 miles before needing to refuel.

The also available 3.6L VR6 engine is outfitted with 24 valves, dual overhead camshafts, variable valve timing, and direct fuel injection, to produce a Touareg-worthy 280 total horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 265 lbs.-ft. of torque starting at 2,750 rpm. When mated to the six-speed automatic transmission with TiptronicÒ mode, healthy EPA estimates of 19 mpg highway, and 14 mpg city, can be achieved.

The transmission found on both the 3.0L TDI clean diesel and 3.6L VR6 model Touaregs can not only reward drivers with noteworthy fuel economy, but also gives drivers an even greater sense of control. When in Tiptronic mode, a simple up or down flick of the gear lever shifts through each of the six gears. The transmission’s sport mode ensures the engine stays in the power “sweet spot,” while the Dynamic Shift Program (DSP) allows the transmission to specifically adapt to different driving styles. The selectable low range first gear adds greater confidence when traversing more slippery and hilly terrain at low speeds.

Chassis and Suspension

With the 2010 Touareg, Volkswagen developed a versatile suspension package that enables it to stay grounded yet run easily through the turns. Starting with a double wishbone front arrangement that is outfitted with MacPherson struts and heavy-duty coil springs, and finishing with an independent four-link setup for the rear, the suspension lets the Touareg and its passengers go farther: The Touareg has 8.3 inches of ground clearance, a 19.7-inch maximum fording depth, the capacity to climb up to 45-degree inclines with up to a 28-degree approach angle, and even take on lateral inclines of up to 35 degrees.

Electro-mechanical, power rack-and-pinion steering makes for comfortable turning of the wheel. When it comes time to stop, the Touareg’s braking system comes into immediate play with four-wheel discs (330 x 32 mm front and 330 x 28 mm rear vented rotors) and an Anti-lock Braking System. Volkswagen’s 4XMOTION all-wheel drive system completes the package, continuously monitoring road conditions and driver inputs to best adjust power sent to each of the four wheels for maximum traction, performance, and, ultimately, safety.

Active and Passive Safety

The 2010 Touareg contains more than 45 active and passive safety features, which are part of Volkswagen’s standard Prevent and Preserve Safety System, to keep the driver and passengers safe. Six airbags, including dual front units (dual-stage for the driver, single stage for the front passenger), thorax units for the driver and front passenger, and side curtain units for the front and rear outboard passengers, all are standard on the Touareg. Each of the five available seating positions has a three-point safety belt, with a pre-tensioner and height adjustment for the driver, front passenger, and rear outboard passengers. For younger occupants in the Touareg, Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) make it easy to add a child car seat.

The Touareg also includes the following safety programs and management systems for a smooth, poised ride through most any situation: an intelligent crash response system, Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), an Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) for the center differential, Engine Braking Control (EBC), Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution, Hill Descent Assist (HDA), Hill Climb Assist (HCA), which can only be engaged in low gear, a rollover sensor system, and Volkswagen’s Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP).

The choice to include ESP standard on the Touareg and all other 2010 Volkswagens, comes ahead of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) mandate that by the 2012 model year, all vehicles produced will need to include some form of Electronic Stability Control (ESC). According to NHTSA, having ESC in a vehicle results in 35 percent fewer single-vehicle crashes and 30 percent fewer single-vehicle fatalities in passenger cars.  Volkswagen’s ESP compares the driver’s intended course with the vehicle’s actual direction. If a discrepancy is detected, ESP automatically brakes individual wheels and/or reduces engine power to help maintain directional control.

The 2010 model year just got even more exclusive for the Dodge Viper. The Dodge brand is unveiling three new unique 2010 Viper SRT10 vehicles as part of its “Dealer Exclusive Program.”

Dealers who sold sufficient Viper volume to qualify were given the opportunity to create their own special editions that best meet the dreams of their most loyal customers. A total of 50 cars are being built under this program, and specific combinations were determined by each Dodge dealer who volunteered to participate.

The 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain received the highest possible rollover protection rating of “Good” in the first Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rollover tests of midsize SUVs and crossovers, one of four tests leading to both vehicles receiving the Institute’s Top Safety Pick award.

The IIHS’s roof strength test pushes a metal plate against one corner of a roof at a constant speed, before five inches of roof crush is reached. To receive its “Good” rating the subject vehicle must withstand a force equal to four times its weight.

“The Top Safety award recognizes vehicles that are on the top rung for safety,” said IIHS president Adrian Lund.  “The Equinox and Terrain are in an elite group of vehicles that have achieved the highest ratings for front, side, rollover, and rear crash protection, and that have electronic stability control to help drivers avoid serious crashes.”

The 2010 Equinox and Terrain offer standard four-wheel disc brakes, traction control and StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. Both offer six standard air bags: dual frontal air bags, head curtain side air bags and seat-mounted side air bags.

“Equinox and Terrain are great examples of a comprehensive safety approach that’s designed to offer peace of mind and keep drivers as safe as possible on the road,” said Jeff Boyer, General Motors executive director of Safety. “This includes technologies to help drivers avoid crashes, features to protect occupants in the event of a crash and systems that get the right kind of help to the scene as quickly as possible.”

The 2010 Equinox and Terrain also have received the highest possible five-star front- and side-impact ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The design of the concept study underscores the expertise of the brand BMW in the development of vehicles with a distinctive sporty character which offer space for more than two occupants. This reflects the particular quality of the BMW Group design philosophy, which consists in precisely and authentically translating the specific values of product substance into an aesthetically convincing shaping style.  The design process is set through with a passion for aesthetic appeal and dynamic performance, precision and perfection. This is how the uncompromising premium aspiration of a BMW Group product, the unmistakable style of the brand BMW and the precisely defined character of each model are given concrete form.

The body design of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé expresses sporty flair in its ultimate form. The 4-door vehicle clearly signals the very highest level of dynamic performance with its extremely elegant, flat and coupe-like proportions. Stretching the entire length of the vehicle and therefore measuring almost 5 metres, flowing lines dominate the design, giving rise to outstanding aerodynamic levels, just as the low centre of gravity reflects an agile driving response.

The front section is defined by the BMW kidney grille characteristic of the brand – an icon of body design which is not just central but also a dominating element of front design. The kidney grille of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé has a flat appearance, with an asymmetrical side view which emphasises the close attention to detail. The central section with the kidney grille is formally separated from other BMW icons such as the headlights and air inlets. The clarity of the LED front lights highlights the vehicle’s precision and premium aspirations. The air inlet runs back an extremely long way into the side section, making the front section appear particularly wide. All elements of the front section appear to merge to form a single, elegantly curved movement.

The sporty, flat silhouette provides an impressive body height of just under 1.40 metres. This makes the BMW Concept Gran Coupé up to 100 millimetres flatter than the BMW 5 Series or the BMW 7 Series Sedan. The roof line tapers off gently into the rear, thereby elongating the vehicle’s proportions. The forward-tilted shark nose visually extends the bonnet and creates characteristic BMW proportions with its forward-pointing dynamism. This stretched character is also highlighted by the side lines, where there is a deliberate avoidance of the typical sill line. The flat proportions make the window graphics appear extremely narrow and dynamic at the same time. Another BMW design icon, the Hofmeister kink, is especially strikingly formed – additionally emphasising the exclusive character of the vehicle. The frameless doors give the BMW Concept Gran Coupé a modern character since the glass surfaces appear to merge seamlessly without being interrupted by columns.

At the rear, only design elements such as the lights and tailpipe trim appear to be visible at first sight. The entire rear section appears slimmer and lighter at the centre, though still exuding power and dynamic performance since the volume is reinforced towards the sides. The L-shaped light banks feature a slight, almost subtle curve and the entire design of the lines and surfaces highlights the vehicle’s elegant overall appearance. The third brake light, positioned in the rear window, is also fitted with LED technology. It takes up the kink in the roof and illuminates the entire width of the rear window. The powerfully flared wheel arches above the rear axle highlight the particularly sporty character of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé.

Another highly sporty and also elegant feature is the rim concept in which the individual spokes extend deep into the centre of the rim towards the hub, giving the rim a striking three-dimensional quality. The spokes themselves are not solid but relief-milled, giving them a visual lightness.

The sculptural shaping style characteristic of the entire body design of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé permits a unique interaction between concave and convex surfaces. It also enables the light to be selectively reflected and channelled. Thus the exterior mirrors integrated in the window shaft appear very light, blending harmoniously into the side view since their shape assimilates the entire line styling. The BMW Concept Gran Coupé is a further development of the classic design of a notchback sedan in which the individual body sections merge harmoniously into a flat, elongated and at the same time dynamic overall image. The effect of this 4-door vehicle derives not just from specific highlights but from its overall appearance, which authentically reflects its character. The car’s dynamic potential is embodied in its proportions and lines, signalling power but also elegance and forward thrust.

One of the most important auto shows worldwide, the 2010 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, more commonly known as Auto China 2010, will be held at the China International Exhibition Center (Tianzhu) and the China International Exhibition Center (Jinganzhuang) in Beijing from April 23-May 2, 2010. Both commercial and passenger vehicles will be showcased at the Tianzhu Center, while auto accessories, parts, and related products will be displayed at the Jinganzhuang Center.

The show will have 990 vehicles on display, including 89 world debuts, of which, 75 vehicles are entrants from China’s domestic automakers, while 14 are from multinationals. Multinational automakers are planning Asian debuts for 41 vehicles, while domestic counterparts will be showing 35 vehicles for the first time. Sixty-five concept cars will be exhibited, including 37 from the multinationals. In addition, the 95 new energy-powered vehicles on display are expected to be head-turners at the event. Italy-based automaker Ducati also will make Asian debuts for two motorcycles.

To celebrate the final year of production for the current-generation Dodge Viper, Dodge is building a limited production run of just 50 2010 Viper SRT10 “Final Edition” models.

Available in Coupe, Roadster and ACR (American Club Racer) model configurations, each Final Edition Viper exterior features a Graphite Clear Coat body with a painted black center stripe traced in red. Viper Coupe and ACR Final Edition models include a black windshield surround. All Final Edition models carry unique side sill badges.

The black interior features custom red accent stitching, red painted halo surrounds on the gauge cluster and bright stainless steel screws in center stack bezel. A numbered dash plaque (1-50) is located on the shifter bezel just above the unique Viper Final Edition floor mats.

The venerable 8.4-liter (510 cu. in.) V-10 engine remains the heart of the 2010 Dodge Viper SRT10. With 600 (450 kW) horsepower and 560 lb.-ft. (760 N*m) of torque, benchmark performance numbers, (including 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds, quarter-mile time in the mid 11-second range, 0-100-0 mph in 11 seconds flat and a top speed of 202 mph) continue to prove how the serious, race-inspired, street-legal two-seater performs without apology.

This build of 50 Final Edition 2010 Dodge Vipers includes all three model configurations for the first time – 20 Coupes, 18 Roadsters and 12 ACRs. In 2002, a total of 360 Viper Final Edition Coupes (326) and ACRs (34) were built with Viper Red Clear Coat exterior and white stripes.

Production of the 2010 Dodge Viper Final Edition models is scheduled to begin in early summer.

The Jeep brand is broadening its vehicle lineup with the introduction of three new rugged, versatile and innovative vehicles that deliver classic Jeep design and capability.

The new 2010 Jeep Liberty Renegade boasts a new premium, rugged appearance with standard class-leading capability features, while the Jeep Wrangler lineup is expanded with unique limited-edition models – Jeep Wrangler Islander and Jeep Wrangler Mountain – that deliver high-impact visual appeal with outdoor fun-and-freedom themes.

Jeep Liberty Renegade

The “Renegade” name returns to the Jeep lineup for 2010. First used in 1964 on the inside door opening of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Renegade has always represented the rebellious heart and soul of the Jeep brand.

Positioned between Liberty’s Sport and Limited models, the new Jeep Liberty Renegade expands the Jeep Liberty lineup, delivering renowned capability – highlighted by Jeep’s Selec-Trac® II full-time, shift-on-the-fly, active four-wheel-drive system – in a unique, premium and rugged new design.

Jeep Liberty Renegade is offered in a new, Renegade-exclusive Salsa Red Pearl Coat exterior, as well as Natural Green Pearl Coat, Deep Water Blue Pearl Coat, Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat and Stone White Clear Coat.

Standard Liberty Renegade exterior features include painted Mineral Gray Keystone 16-inch wheels that wear new, rugged all-terrain P235/70R16 outline white letter (OWL); dark neutral metallic wheel flares, lower side sills, front and rear fascia, body side moldings and rear license plate bar; black headlamp bezel; Argent Silver accent on the lower fascia applique and roof rack; Satin Black vinyl hood graphics; deep-tint glass; fog lamps; skid plates and tow hooks.

Jeep Liberty Renegade’s standard Selec-Trac II active four-wheel-drive system offers customers the benefit of a fully electronic two-speed active transfer case and Brake-traction Control System (BTCS). It instantly anticipates wheel slip and redirects torque accordingly, which is ideal for off-roading or when driving in inclement weather.

This premium system offers a “4WD Auto” mode that is ideal for full-time driving. When in 4WD Auto mode, the system uses vehicle sensors to adjust and redirect torque between front and rear axles based on real-time driving conditions, providing the vehicle with responsive tractive performance.

For added capability when traversing steep grades, rough terrain or extremely poor traction surfaces, the transfer case includes a “4WD Low” mode. This second-speed gear multiplies engine torque 2.72 times and locks the clutch pack for maximum traction.

Electric shifting between 2WD, 4WD Auto and 4WD Low is accomplished with a console-mounted switch. A push-pin button is used to shift to Neutral mode.

A 3.7-liter V-6 engine is standard on all Jeep Liberty models, including the new Renegade. The 3.7-liter engine produces 210 horsepower (157 kW) @ 5,200 rpm and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N*m) of torque @ 4,000 rpm.

Jeep Wrangler Islander

After more than 20 years, the unique Islander theme returns to Jeep.

The limited-edition Jeep Wrangler Islander is available on Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited 4×4 models. Based on the Wrangler Sport model, the Islander’s unique beach theme conveys open-air fun at first and every glance.

Jeep Wrangler Islander is featured in unique Surf Blue Pearl Coat, and is also available in Stone White Clear Coat, Bright Sliver Metallic Clear Coat and Brilliant Black Crystal Clear Coat.

Other exterior features include an Islander “Jeep Tiki” decal on the hood with latitude and longitude coordinates that represent an actual location relating to the “Islander” theme of the vehicle, black side steps and popular Moab 17-inch wheels shod with 32-inch tires.

Further expanding the iconic Wrangler brand’s reach, Jeep delivers another high-impact, limited-edition model with the Jeep Wrangler Mountain edition.

The Jeep Wrangler Mountain edition is based on the Wrangler Sport S package, and is available on Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited 4×4 models.

Exterior features include a unique “Mountain” decal on the hood with latitude and longitude coordinates that represent an actual location relating to the “Mountain” theme of the vehicle; painted high-gloss Mineral Gray 17-inch Moab wheels, grille and bumper appliques; tubular side steps; 32-inch tires; black tail lamp guards; and a fuel-filler door from Mopar.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) today announced that the all-new 2010 Toyota 4Runner mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) has earned its highest ranking of “good” in their frontal offset high-speed crash ratings.

IIHS frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of 40 mph frontal offset crash tests. A vehicle’s overall frontal evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion into the occupant compartment, driver seat test dummy injury severity, and the level of restraint system dummy movement during the test.  By comparison, frontal crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is performed at 35 mph.

The IIHS is an independent non-profit research and communications organization funded by auto insurance companies.
