A car in front of his braked hard just before a roundabout and he hit the back of it. Unluckily, there was a policeman standing only fifty yards away who witnessed it and I suspect he was looking out for accidents like this, there has been a big spate of fraudulent ones recently with people staging collisions then putting in huge claims for alleged whiplash injury. Anyway, to cut a long story short my friend was uninsured, because he simply couldn’t afford the premium that UK insurers charge for young drivers like him. He was fined 200 UK pounds, was banned from driving for six months and lost his job as a result. The court case with the owner of the car he hit is still dragging on and his legal costs alone are more than £2,000 which is pretty much all he has in the world. Drive without insurance? No thanks.
